A beautiful entryway sets the tone for your home. Let’s make it count! See how I designed our small space with beautiful and functional entryway decor ideas.

Things are coming together over at the Lavender Blue Cottage, and I cannot wait to share our latest developments.
Before I get started, make sure you checkout the reveal of our remodeled English cottage pantry. It’s not a typical pantry at all and I love, love, love that space!
Today, I’ll be showing you around our entryway. It’s a small space, as entryways in older homes tend to be, but it’s full of charm and character. I employed some design tips and tricks, which I’ll be sharing, to make this area as beautiful, welcoming and functional as possible.

The Impact of an Entryway
Home styles are always changing, which means the concept of an entryway is always evolving. You may have a large, dedicated foyer or simply a door that opens into your living room. Regardless, the entrance to your home is an opportunity to welcome family and guests while creating atmosphere for the rest of your home.

Entryway Decor Ideas
My front door entryway is small. It’s really just a hallway leading to the rest of the home. I knew that a small front entrance was going to present a design challenge, but I still wanted to make this area a welcoming space.
I decided to lean into the idea that less is more. Too much decor can feel like clutter, especially in smaller homes and spaces.
Keep Entryway Decor to a Minimum
As we peak through the doorway from our study room, you’ll see the main feature of our small entryway is an antique hutch. This piece is totally darling, and I had to find a home for it.

The hutch is a great alternative to a console table, and it allows me a place to display some entryway table decor.
I love that wooden bowl for storing keys and sunglasses. The vase and flowers can be swapped out for the changing seasons. Decorated without being overdone, just the way I like it.
By the way, I must mention how a simple candle can create a whole lot of ambiance in any room. Easy instant upgrade!

Incorporate Storage Pieces
As I mentioned, we chose to go with a hutch over say a bench or cubbies, and it has the bonus of extra storage spaces that can be hidden from view. Is it a total mess behind those closed doors? You’ll never know! And I’ll never tell! 😉
Although adding entryway storage takes up some space, it cuts down on visual clutter that can make small foyers feel chaotic and crowded.

A cute basket can allow everyone (but mostly mom) to hide dirty shoes from view. Perfect!
Add Meaningful Art to your Entryway Decor
Artwork is one way that you can set a tone for your home. Colors and images can be powerful. If you love a piece of wall art or a sculpture, make it a focal point.
I adore this picture of Christ as well as that charming countryside. They calm my heart and bring a smile to my face.

Personalize Your Space
Along with artwork, personalizing your space with unique items can reflect the personality of the homeowner. Bold wallpaper, dramatic colors, modern furniture – whatever makes you happy. It gives visitors a sense of who you are.
Personally, I loved the little “no smoking” sign that we hung on our door. It’s a cute and quirky way to add a little personality to our entryway decor.

Make a Transition Zone
Having a place to transition when you walk in the door is the whole idea behind an entryway. Make sure you include items like a rug with durability to catch and hide dirt.
Also, providing somewhere for people to hang jackets, bags and hats is so welcoming. The little wooden coat rack seen below has gone everywhere with me, and I’ve loved it in every space.

Special Details Make a Difference
We added a few unique features to our entryway to make it special. One is this ruffled light fixture, which is adorable with its wavy shape and floral pattern. It’s perfect for a cottage home.
This area has lots of natural light, so we didn’t feel the need for a lamp or other light fixtures.
The trim work in this area was all handmade by Mr. TIDBITS. I was inspired by some beautiful homes I saw on our church history tour.

I love the handmade wood trim, with all its beautiful imperfections.

Entryway Color Ideas

Finally, let’s talk about the paint colors used in this space makeover.
The white color on our upper walls is called White Dove by Benjamin Moore.
The oatmeal color on our wood trim is Soft Linen by Magnolia.
Both colors are soft and soothing, which I wanted to help me set a calm mood for the Lavender Blue Cottage. This home is a haven and my happy place.
