Big impact in a small space! See our cottage half bathroom design ideas brought to life in our latest makeover.

Today is going to be fun! I finally get to reveal an itty-bitty (yet important) room that has been neglected for the past two years while we’ve been renovating other areas of the Lavender Blue Cottage.
I’m talking about our half bathroom.
This powder room is a small space that sits beside the kitchen and the entrance to our garage. It’s the bathroom that guests always use and the one that we use to wash up in after working outside.
It’s convenient to have, but it sure wasn’t pretty. Until now.

My goal was this: Add some charming cottage/old world updates to this half bath while keeping it as functional as possible. Balance feminine and masculine design elements. Create a curated look. Don’t spend too much money (of course).
I think we did it! Let’s take a look at the half bathroom design ideas we used to bring this space to life.

Countertop, Sink and Faucet
The first update in this small bathroom was a replacement of the countertop, sink and faucet. We did that at the same time that we replaced countertops in the kitchen, because it saved money bundling those purchases together.

The countertops are a black soapstone and the new faucet has antique-looking brass fixtures. We kept the original wooden vanity as it was still in great shape.
Half Bathroom Flooring and Rug
Flooring came next, with an old-world style green and white tile that inspired this bathroom’s gray/green color scheme.

I love the look of the tile and it paired beautifully with the waffle floor mat.
Wall and Ceiling Treatment
We decided to wrap the walls in a bead board wall treatment with a chunky chair rail, similar to what we did in the living room and yellow bedroom.

The ceiling also got wooden planking and crown molding. To make it cohesive, we painted both the wall ceiling treatments in a gorgeous sage green color called Pigeon by Farrow & Ball (color matched at Home Depot).
Cottage Bathroom Wall Paper and Light Fixture
There are no white walls in this little room! Along with the beadboard wainscoting, we decided to put up some floral patterned wall paper. It adds a sweet touch to this little cottage bathroom.

An adorable light fixture and a vintage-inspired towel rod and toilet paper rod add personality to the room.
Mirror, Shelf and Custom Details
I found a beautiful rounded mirror with a wood trim that I love in here. The wood tone matches beautifully with the vanity, closet door and window trim which were all left in their original wood color.
A shallow white shelf that I bought second-hand went up on the wall above the toilet for extra storage. I wanted something with a low profile for this tight space.

The shelf holds soap and lotion dispensers, a reed diffuser, gray hand towels and some of our other cream hand towels.
Half Bathroom Decor Design Ideas
Other bathroom decor ideas included a faux plant that hangs out on our shelf, black and white towels, and a purple soap dispenser on a wooden riser.

Our waste basket is a narrow wicker basket that fits the cottage vibe. Another basket with scalloped edges holds extra toilet paper and bathroom supplies.

Here and there throughout the room we tried to add little touches that were beautiful and meaningful.
Pattern, color, textures, artwork – all of it just works together in this room.
Even though it’s just a small bathroom, those special additions make it feel comfortable and welcoming. Now it’s one more room that finally feels like home to me.

And that, my friends, is the Lavender Blue cottage half bathroom!
