It’s time to get cozy! Join me for a tour of our cozy cottage living room as I share all of my sources and secret tips for creating the perfect cottage vibe.

My friend, thank you so much for joining me here today!
You can’t see it, but I’m breathing a big sigh of relief over here at the Lavender Blue Cottage. That’s because I’ve finally finished our main living room space – just in time for the holidays! Thank goodness too, because holiday construction is my least favorite construction of all (although 5-gallon buckets with lids do make pretty decent seats in a pinch).
Now, we’ll get to snuggle up in a cozy cottage living room that feels like home. Who could ask for more?

As a reminder, this room was remodeled by our family and furnished/decorated piece-by-piece with unique finds, antiques, family heirlooms and all of the wonderful things that go into a home. You won’t find a brand-new matching living room set here, but you’ll find things that make this heart of mine happy.

Cottage Living Room Paint Colors and Trim Work
Let’s start with paint colors and trim work.
Mr. TIDBITS installed beadboard along the main wall behind the couch in this living room. We then played around with different trim pieces to come up with a custom chunky chair rail, which we beaded ourselves.

And over by the stairs, we used a similar process of experimenting to come up with some trim to highlight the steps of our staircase. It’s a pretty little detail that adds a lot of character to the room.

Did you notice the wood beam on the wall between the stairs and desk? That was added because the area where the desk sits was formerly a closet. Once we removed it, we found that the walls were not flush with each other, so we brought in that lovely barnwood beam to disguise the difference. I don’t mind it one bit. 🙂
The color palette for this room was calm and neutral. We used a creamy white color called White Dove by Benjamin Moore for the walls. The trim work is a beautiful oatmeal color called Slipper Satin by Farrow and Ball. These colors work so well with the wood tones and natural textures in this space.
If you’d like to see all the paint colors used here at the Lavender Blue Cottage, see my Cottage Paint Colors post where I show you examples and share names of each and every paint color used in our home.

Ceiling and Lighting
This room doesn’t receive tons of natural light, which meant that we got the opportunity to make our own light. The light paint colors were really helpful in brightening up the room. We also added tongue and groove boards to the ceiling and painted them to match the walls.

We installed additional light fixtures (this room was super dark before the remodel!) and added lamps, candles and all the cozy touches we could find.

The Carriage House lighting fixtures add some of the primitive colonial charm that I love.
Flooring and Rug
Along with the light paint colors and additional lighting, we made new flooring a part of our interior design to brighten the space up. A pad and rug were added for extra coziness under foot.
Cozy Furniture
This cozy cottage living room was in need of some comfortable furniture. Since I’m not a matchy-matchy girl, this required a lot of time to find just the right pieces.
Below you can see a plaid armchair and a brown leather recliner. The leather recliner is bit out of my norm, but it was my husband’s one wish and who can say no to that after all his hard work? I feel like this leather chair has great style and comfort – so it was a win win!

Also featured in this room are an IKEA Uppland sofa and an Uppland chair with ottoman. Both are so comfortable and come in a variety of different colors. To personalize them even more, I selected a light linen cover for the armchair and ottoman, and a dark gray wool cover for the sofa.

A vintage desk, snagged off of Facebook Marketplace sits in the corner that was formerly a closet. It’s my husband’s desk, but I love it so much that I find myself obsessively tidying it up and rearranging it with decor. I just can’t resist! Can you blame me?

The desk chair is another beautiful vintage find.
Next to our sofa, you’ll see a sweet little end table. That piece came to me from my grandmother’s house after she passed away. I cherish this piece because it reminds me of her and her beautiful home. Sweet memories.

The last piece of furniture I’ll mention is the table you see in front of the sofa. This was a $12 thrift store find. It’s old, worn, chipped and stained in all the best ways. While some might think it’s a touch too tall or too worn, I think it’s perfection. You can’t find that age-worn patina and character on a new piece of furniture.

I love seeing it from this angle, with the dining room and its vintage hutch in the background.
Cottage Living Room Decor
Finally, we’ve come to the cottage decor. The finishing touches that make all the difference.
Above my husband’s desk is a lovely shelf with drawers that was another thrift store find. I’ve styled it with some vintage books and decor. As for those 3 birds on the wall – I don’t really know what they are meant for or made from, but they delighted me, so I found a home for them.

Over near the fireplace you’ll find bundles of drying flowers, as well as a variety of wicker baskets and some antique rug beaters that make great cottage decor.
Fun fact that I made up: one can never have too many baskets.

The fireplace mantel is decorated with our diy hand-dipped beeswax candles and bits of cottage decor that I’ve collected over the years. I love changing out mantel decor and this mantel, with its rustic character and visual interest is extra fun to decorate.

Many people have asked me whether I’ll whitewash the brick around this fireplace. The answer is that I don’t plan to.
Although whitewashed brick is gorgeous, these particular bricks, and the ones around our kitchen range, came from historic homes in my local area and I want to preserve them just the way that they are.
Below are more antique decor pieces that I fell in love with and had to bring home. Nothing new, shiny, or fancy, but full of a timeless charm that I adore.
