Homeschool and study room decor ideas. See the budget-friendly hacks we used to create the perfect space for learning and working.

A look into a homeschool room with a long table, chairs and bookcases

I’m starting to think I should call these room reveals something like “tips and tours” because to me that’s exactly what they are. I get to take you, my friend, through my newly finished space and spill all the beans about what we did, how we did it, where we got it, and so on.

Swapping ideas and inspiration is one of my favorite things!

This time, it’s the homeschool/office/study room that I get to show you. This is a well-used and much-loved space for us. As a family that works from home and homeschools, there is always something going on in this room.

I needed this room to be beautiful, functional and inspiring. I’m excited to show you what we did to make the most of this space!

Soothing Study Room Colors

Alrighty, let’s start at the beginning with paint colors. Because you and I both know that the right paint color can completely change the feel of your room interiors.

I wanted to use colors that would have a calming effect, since the kids and I spend so much time in this space.

We ended up with two colors in room. One for the creamy white walls and another for the dusty blue on the bookcase, trim and doors. These light colors help set the mood in our homeschool room.

The white color is White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

The blue is Vintage Weathervane by Magnolia. (Yes, I am obsessed with dusty blues! It’s my favorite color. See how I used similar colors in the pantry and basement living room!)

By the way, if you want to find names and resources for all the paint colors used in our home in one place, see Lavender Blue Cottage Paint Colors.

Make Your Study Space Comfortable

Next, it was time to make things a little more comfortable.

I selected a large rug and a rug pad to fill the area beneath our workspace. It’s just nice to have something soft under foot, especially on long days. It makes the whole room so much more inviting.

I even hung some blankets in here for those chilly winter mornings.

IKEA Hack for Home Offices

One of our best study room decor ideas was this faux built-in wall of bookshelves. It was made using the same IKEA bookshelf hack that we used for the homeschool room in our pole barn home. It gives you a high-end look for way less and you can continue to customize the look with cabinet doors, lighting and so on. These are the IKEA Havsta cabinets, built-in to our space and separated by a white oak countertop.

We added picture lights to the top of our built-in cabinets for a special touch of elegance (plus they offer really good lighting!).

Cabinets like these are fantastic storage solutions. They hide the clutter, look beautiful and provide us with plenty of storage space.

Make a Dedicated Workspace

I am so grateful that we have enough room in this house to have a dedicated office and homeschool room. I know that isn’t an option for everyone, but if you can swing it, having a space just for work is so much easier than transitioning from work to mealtimes and back again.

We already owned this extra-long table, and I knew it would be perfect for doing homework in our study area. It gives us lots of room to spread out when the creativity starts flowing.

I found darling green chairs and added seat cushions for extra comfort. And that comfortable desk beneath the window? That’s my workspace and I absolutely love it!

Over in the corner is another study nook with a sturdy desk that the kids use when they need to be on the computer. This corner has a nearby outlet, and not running cords across the room really saves my sanity!

Storage is a Must

You can never have too much storage, and this study room is absolutely peppered with it. We’ve used shelves for decor and storage, drawers for hiding clutter, cabinets for styling and organizing books, wicker baskets for actual waste baskets, and anything else that could be both pretty and useful.

Even the wooden caddy centerpiece on our table doubles as storage with its many compartments for pencils and other supplies. (You know I had to sneak some flowers in there somewhere!)

It’s always easier to concentrate in a space that is organized and free of distractions.

Bring in the Piano

Ok, this next idea won’t work for everybody, but I adore having music and a piano in the homeschool room.

This piano was found for free on Facebook marketplace. All we had to do was pick it up. Can you believe that?!

If you’re in the market for a piano, it’s worth the time to browse the classified ads or online marketplaces. You might get lucky and find someone who is happy to have you take that old piano off their hands.

Choose Inspiring Art

Artwork can add a personalized touch to your rooms.

I found this gorgeous print in an Etsy shop and swooped in to make it mine. I love having it as a sweet reminder of what I should be focused on.

Add Meaningful Decor

Tiny touches of meaningful decor are all it takes to make a room special.

In this office study room, I’ve hung some art and favorite quotes from the scriptures on our bulletin board with decorative pins. I also framed the $10 bill we found when we broke ground in our lavender field. It’s a sign of good luck, hopefully.

And did you notice the little bundle of lavender in the bottom corner of the bulletin board? That was from our first harvest her at the Lavender Blue Farm. There are a lot of hopes and dreams wrapped up in the little bundle!

If something has great meaning to you, find a place to display it. Your days better will be better if you’re surrounded by beautiful decor that speaks to your heart.
